Back in November, the Mister and I stopped by Everlane since we were in the area. We did not intend to buy anything, but each walked out with an item. What he bought, the Heavyweight Overshirt, was not something that caught his eye while browsing the website. Seeing it on the rack enticed him to try it on. Since then it’s become one of his most-worn items so I thought it’s time to do a little review. In-person shopping for the win!

Heavyweight Overshirt – $138 (some colors are marked down to as low as $35). This model is 6’3″ and wearing size L.

How a size S looks on someone who is 5’6″

Materials: 8 oz heavy cotton twill. The Mister reports that “it’s by far the heaviest shirt I own.” The material is “kind of stiff, but you get used to it.” He finds it warm and comfortable.
Style: It has a classic look with a slightly relaxed straight fit. “It’s cut very nicely,” the Mister says.

Sizing & Fit: Fits true to size at first. However, it shrinks! After washing it on cold and hang drying, it shrunk considerably — to the point where we worried we had ruined it! But the shirt eased up after some wear, much in the way that jeans are often tight after washing and then loosen up. It’s still smaller post-washing than it was when he tried it on in the store, but not as tight as right after washing.
Since this shirt is slightly relaxed to begin with, you might get away with your usual size (as was the case for the Mister). Or, you might need to size up. When trying it on, make sure that there’s extra room in the fit to account for shrinkage.
Where It’s Made & How It’s Worn: The Phong Phu International Joint Stock Company in Vietnam produces this shirt for Everlane. It seems well constructed. After five months of constant wear, while it doesn’t look new, it still looks good.
The Perfect Item for Layering
While Everlane says you can wear this as a shirt, I think it’s a bit too thick for that (though maybe it would be nice on a cold day instead of a sweater). Where it really excels is as a layering item. Before acquiring this overshirt, the Mister was thinking he needed a cotton cardigan for those days where it was a too warm for a wool one. But this shirt serves the same purpose in providing a light layer. And in many ways, it’s better than a cardigan as it has some structure and is warm without being bulky.
Overall, it’s a versatile piece that works in nearly all seasons (not summer, of course). It comes in a variety of earthy colors that are easy to style. No wonder it’s part of Everlane Uniform, a collection of wardrobe essentials for men that come with a 365-day guarantee.
Everlane launched Uniform in 2020, which I think is a smart way to market those items. To me, the brand is the best when they make staples that you can count on year after year. Judging by how far back the reviews go, Everlane introduced the Heavyweight Overshirt in 2017. It has since become a mainstay offering (unlike what I bought on that November day, this pleated skirt, which is now on clearance). The overshirt has certainly become part of the Mister’s personal uniform. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got one in another color.
And psst, it looks good on women too.
