Ah, spring in New York City. That time of year when temperatures go up and down and up and down again like a roller coaster. I love when it’s warmer, but still cool enough that you need a layer. But that kind of weather is often short-lived here — which is why I thought I better share a transitional weather outfit while I can!
Here’s an outfit I’ve been wearing lately consisting of some recent wardrobe additions. I started with a monochrome base of brown: a pleated crepe midi skirt from Everlane and a silk tank from Quince.

The skirt caught my eye back in the fall and after thinking it over for a bit, I bought it in November. Though I try not to buy synthetic fabric anymore, for certain items you can’t avoid it. And for pleated garments, synthetics help the pleats stay. This skirt is made out of Global Recycled Standard-certified recycled polyester and drapes nicely. I wasn’t sure about the wide belt loops at first, but they’ve grown on me. I styled it with a skinny snakeskin print belt that I thrifted years ago in San Francisco.

Details: The fabric of the skirt is a drapey satin-back crepe. BTW, this Everlane skirt also comes in black, but I thought the brown was the more interesting color.
On top, I layered a short cotton jacket from Uniqlo. It’s my most recent purchase and has already become one of my favorite things to wear. Unlike the skirt, I pretty much bought the jacket as soon as I discovered its existence. Within two seconds of trying it on in the store, I knew it was coming home with me.
It has a vintage feel, inspired by barn jackets, but a modern cut. The short length works well for my petite height. And the oversized fit is comfortable. (I can layer it over a light sweater if needed). I love the detail of the corduroy collar. The cuffs, if folded over, also reveal corduroy. All the colorways are great, but I especially like this navy denim. The structure, proportions, and cut are so nice that you could mistake it for designer. It looks more expensive than it is.

Footwear-wise, I went with these Nisolo chelsea boots. The low heel keep things casual. The slouchy suede shoulder bag is from Quince. I’ve been eyeing it for a while, and finally decided to go for it. This hue (pebble) is a neutral that goes with a lot.

The structure of the jacket balances the flowy, drapey skirt. It’s at once pulled together and at ease. And I feel that brown and blue is an underrated color combo!

Question for you: What’s an item you’ve bought that you knew right away was right for you?
