Why I Don’t Do Holiday Gifts or Gift Guides (Plus, How to Make a Fabric Wreath)
Tis the season for gift guides. But you won’t see one here.

I’m starting a feature on the blog called Field Trips, visiting places that are doing something interesting when it comes to sustainability. The first destination is SCRAP SF.
Earlier this year, I bought a Guppyfriend Washing Bag and added it to my laundry routine. Some surfer friends developed the Guppyfriend as a way to trap the plastic microfibers that are generated when we wash our clothes.
This year, I’m trying to cut down on my plastic consumption even more — and that includes bioplastics. A spork is part of my EDC (every day carry). (Actually, two sporks.)
Carrying a water bottle has become second nature to me. I always have one in my bag to keep hydrated and to avoid single-use plastic bottles. Since I’m picky about my water bottles, I thought I’d give a shout-out to my favorite kind — S’ip by S’well.
About a month ago, I picked up a silicone sponge from Sur La Table. I was intrigued by its claim of drying quickly, not harboring germs, and lasting much longer than your typical sponge.
One small eco-friendly thing that I try to do is cut down on the amount of plastic I use. Plastic takes forever (about 1,000 years) to decompose. No bottled water for me. And no plastic bags, especially the flimsy one-use kind. I started carrying my own reusable bag to shop, but what about produce bags at the grocery store?
Do you get compliments on your resuable bag? I do.
